Spirals of Hope (acrylic paint and imitation gold leaf on wood)

At our parish retreat, we dove into the theme of Body and Soul using Joanna Macy and Chris Johnstone’s image of the spiral (described in their book Active Hope) to explore what they call “the work that reconnects.” This is work done by individuals and communities to reconnect to our bodies, to community, to the Earth, and to the Holy. The process outlined by Macy and Johnstone is not linear. We return to it again and again, bringing wisdom from past work to present healing, continuing the spiral toward meaningful connection and hope.

During the retreat, Grace members of all ages made these spirals to represent their own journeys and—by placing them in conversation with one another—our collective journey as a community of faith. The artists began by rolling modeling clay into long “snakes” and arranging them on their wood blocks. They then used sustainably collected natural sea sponges to paint over the clay. When the clay “masking” was removed, it revealed the unpainted pattern underneath. The imitation gold leaf is a reference to orthodox iconography and the glimpses of the Divine we find through the work of healing and reconnection.

A Book and Chat Group for Parents

A Book and Chat Group for Parents

Begins March 10 at 7:00 p.m.

What if it’s our job as parents to help our kids get to know God and discover that God can be trusted? What if faith is not constructed brick by brick, but rather woven strand by strand?

We'll be discussing Woven: Nurturing a Faith Your Kid Doesn’t Have to Heal From, by Meredith Miller.

We will meet on the second Monday of each month at Kim Cockroft's home. Details and RSVP – kim@gracehere.org.

“FOR THE BIRDS” CONCERT

“FOR THE BIRDS” CONCERT

Friday, March 14 at 7:00 p.m. at Grace Church

Live music, images, and poetry invite reflection on our changing climate.

For the Birds features a jazz quintet performing the original music of Seattle pianist and composer Nelda Swiggett. The performance engages the power of artistic expression — live music, spoken words, images and poetry — to connect audiences deeply and emotionally to the scientific realities of climate change. Ultimately this is a story of hope, and audiences leave the performance feeling empowered to take meaningful action.

Hosted by the Earth and Spirit Ministry of Grace

Suggested Donation $10 - $20 / Students $5

Help support our KIAC families

Our friends and neighbors served by KIAC (Kitsap Immigrant Assistance Center) are scared to go to the market for food, to send their children to school or seek medical treatment due to I.C.E. (Immigration Customs Enforcement) in our county. During the month of March, Grace’s Outreach/Faith in Action ministry is collecting much-needed donations:

white rice • dry black beans • Maseca® (corn masa flour) • paper towels • toilet paper • bar soap

Please leave them in the narthex, making sure they are kept separate from the donations for our Afghan family.

Thank You/Gracias!

Looking for Grace Night Owls

To support the safety and security of our sacred place, Night Owl members sign up on a weekly basis to spend about 20 minutes each evening (after 9:00 p.m. or so) walking the exterior of the building, verifying that all doors and windows are locked and latched, and closing the gate. Click here to learn about the duties of the Night Owls and to sign up. Questions? Contact Place for Grace leader Dan Rohan at (206) 660-1228 or drohan@gmail.com. Pádraig Ó Tuama: The Better Angels of Our Nature

Pádraig Ó Tuama: The Better Angels of Our Nature

An evening with the acclaimed poet and theologian

Thursday, April 3, 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. at St. Mark’s Cathedral and livestreamed. Registration required.

We live in fraught times when violence seems to be the common denominator in a calculus based in mistrust and misanthropic othering. An eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind… Drawing on inspiration from his work with language and religion, conflict and peacemaking, this truth-teller of our time will draw us into an orbit of soulful wisdom and poetic grace.

Fee: $15 (for in-person and livestream participation). Visit Pádraig Ó Tuama’s website, and click below for more information about the event.

If you are interested in travelling together to this event and catching dinner together beforehand as a group, please register and contact Kim Cockroft.
