Sunday Guest Speakers During Lent

For the next two Sundays in place of the homily at each service, speakers from non-profits will speak to us about their vital work and what sustains them in their mission.

We hope that their words will expand our imaginations as we continue our Lenten discussion, “How then shall we live?” Please invite friends and neighbors.

This Sunday, March 23, we will welcome Pam Schneider, Director of Development at Scarlet Road, an organization dedicated to preventing trafficking and restoring the lives of those who have experienced sexual exploitation in Kitsap County.

Note: If you would rather your children not hear about sexual trafficking, please make sure they come to Sunday School after the Children’s Moment.

Rev. Barbara Weza, Executive Director of Chaplains on the Harbor, will share her experiences at our March 30 services.

Click here to hear remarks by Charlie Thompson, Executive Director of Fishline, who shared with us on March 16.

Learn More About the Grace Labyrinth

Learn More About the Grace Labyrinth

This Sunday

Following the 9:30 service on March 23, there will be an opportunity to get acquainted — or re-acquainted — with our Labyrinth.

One of the less visible treasures associated with Grace, the Labyrinth has a beautiful history and is open to all who would like to visit, walk, and meditate.

Kathie McCarthy, who designed and oversaw the creation of the Labyrinth, will be present to tell the story of its history and invite your questions and experiences.

All are welcome!

Tuesdays in Lent

March 11 – April 8 from 6:15 – 8:30 p.m.

We will gather Tuesday evenings at 6:15 for soup & supper. From 7 – 8:15 pm we will discuss What is God’s Kingdom and What Does Citizenship Look Like? by Mennonite pastor, Cesar Garcia. We will close with Evening Vespers.

The book and a reading schedule are available in the narthex for a suggested donation of $12.

We need your participation! If you'd like to help make or serve soup, please contact Rachel Yobs.

If you have other questions, please contact kim@gracehere.org.

“Resettlement With Grace” Welcomes a Second Afghan Family!

Our deepest thanks for the overflowing generosity extended to the Hasimi family this past week after the birth of their twin daughters. Barbara Hume and Kathy Deasy transported another carful of donations to the Hasimis’ apartment last Sunday. The older daughters (ages 9, 7, and 3) gave them an exuberant welcome and begged that they stay longer to play with them. GRACE HAPPENS!

RWG has now welcomed another Afghan family! Aziz is a Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) holder, having worked for the U.S. Government as a translator. He arrived at Sea-Tac with his wife and four children (ages 4-10) on March 18th and was greeted by Kathy, Barbara, and Kathy Gillogley. After a short AirBnB stay, RWG will be covering a minimum of three months’ rent and utilities in an apartment to be furnished, as well as food and basic needs for 30 days. RWG will provide assistance (and transportation) with the family’s  applications for services and benefits and will help Aziz find a job. A list of household needs will be forthcoming.

Monetary donations are also appreciated. Click here to donate online through Realm, or write a check to Grace Church with RWG in the memo line. Contact: Email Kathy Deasy or call (928) 606-3410.

Help Support our KIAC Families

Help Support our KIAC Families

Our friends and neighbors served by KIAC (Kitsap Immigrant Assistance Center) are scared to go to the market for food, to send their children to school or seek medical treatment due to I.C.E. (U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement) in our county. During the month of March, Grace’s Outreach/Faith in Action ministry is collecting much-needed donations:

white rice • dry black beans • Maseca® (corn masa flour) • paper towels • toilet paper • bar soap

Please leave them in the narthex, making sure they are kept separate from the donations for our Afghan family.

Thank You/Gracias!

Special Thanks From PeaceTrees Vietnam

Special Thanks From PeaceTrees Vietnam

We have received a letter of sincere gratitude from our ministry partner, PeaceTrees Vietnam, for our ongoing support. Our donations have helped reinstate their demining work and also has provided hot lunches and nutritional support to the children at the Prin Thanh Kindergarten!

Looking for Grace Night Owls

Looking for Grace Night Owls

To support the safety and security of our sacred place, Night Owl members sign up on a weekly basis to spend about 20 minutes each evening (after 9:00 p.m. or so) walking the exterior of the building, verifying that all doors and windows are locked and latched, and closing the gate. Click here to learn about the duties of the Night Owls and to sign up. Questions? Contact Place for Grace leader Dan Rohan at (206) 660-1228 or drohan@gmail.com. Volunteering would be a huge gift to Grace.

Growing Grace

Growing Grace

The Growing Grace committee was formed in 2024 in response to a felt need by Grace’s leadership to expand our membership while also sustaining our community’s spiritual growth. Our newest iteration of this committee has been strategically and prayerfully grappling with the question, “How may we become more welcoming?”

To that end, we’re making strides toward welcoming our newcomers. We have plans to improve our physical space, such as updating our signage. We’ve also been asking questions about what people are looking for in a spiritual community.

You can help us by inviting a friend or neighbor to church, or to one of our faith formation events, such as Tuesday Lenten evenings. Consider introducing yourself to someone at Grace you haven’t yet met and inviting them to coffee hour. Or get to know our children better by volunteering to help in Sunday School. We are grateful for the way our community looks out for the visitors among us. Together we will continue to build the Kingdom of God, one loving invitation at a time.

And we're seeing new faces at Grace. At our most recent Newcomers Dinner, we had twelve adults and five children. Thanks to Membership Lead Liz Shaw-Powell, and the team of Welcomers, for hosting this lovely event!

Warmly,
Kim Cockroft, for the Growing Grace Committee

Interfaith Council Music Festival

Interfaith Council Music Festival

Sunday, March 30 at 3:00 p.m.

Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints
8677 Madison Avenue Northeast

Grace parishioners of all musical abilities are invited to join the Music Circle to perform at the Interfaith Council Music Festival. Each organization prepares one song, and then all participants sing a song together that they learned at the event. It’s a very easy lift and a great community-building experience. Contact Music Director Kim Thompson for more information.

We will rehearse at Grace on Sunday, March 23, after the 9:30 a.m. service.

Celebrating the Life of Constance Eileen Culver

All are welcome to the online tribute for former Grace member and pianist Connie Culver at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 29th. To receive a link, email her daughter, Denise Nelson.

Dawn Chorus

Dawn Chorus

Sunday, April 6, 7 – 8 a.m.

Earth & Spirit will host our annual “Dawn Chorus” birdwatching at Grace, with veteran birder Demi Allen.

We will meet in the Grace parking lot, then quietly walk the Grace trails and listen for our feathered friends. All ages are welcome.

The most exuberant singing is often heard in spring when birds identify territories and mates. Come help us add some new species to the Grace bird list.

Demi will bring a spotting scope. Bring binoculars and a bird guide if you have them.

Beulah Downing encourages us to use Cornell’s Merlin bird ID app to identify birds we see or hear. Using it, she was able to identify the songs of a Spotted Towhee, Northern Flicker, Pine Siskin, Junco, Robin, and a Crow in the distance. “It was the loud call of the Flicker that got my attention, and then I began to hear more and more. A wonderful morning chorus!”

Pádraig Ó Tuama: The Better Angels of Our Nature

An evening with the acclaimed poet and theologian

Thursday, April 3, 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. at St. Mark’s Cathedral and livestreamed. Registration required.

If you are interested in travelling together to this event and catching dinner together beforehand as a group, please register and contact Kim Cockroft.

We live in fraught times when violence seems to be the common denominator in a calculus based in mistrust and misanthropic othering. An eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind… Drawing on inspiration from his work with language and religion, conflict and peacemaking, this truth-teller of our time will draw us into an orbit of soulful wisdom and poetic grace.

Fee: $15 (for in-person and livestream participation). Visit Pádraig Ó Tuama’s website, and click below for more information about the event.
