“Thriving in the Sandwich Generation”
Christy Byrne Yates, M.S., LEP

Nearly 50% of Americans are feeling the squeeze of the Sandwich Generation – raising children while managing the care of aging elders. This takes a toll on personal well-being when you’re the one in the middle, and it has an impact on how we show up as parents and as caregivers.

Christy Byrne Yates, author of Building a Legacy of Love: Thriving in the Sandwich Generation will be our speaker at the next Open Mic for Caregivers meeting on July 12 at 4:00 p.m.

You do not need to be a Grace member or a caregiver to attend. All are welcome!

Invite friends! Bring your questions and stories.

Cooked: Survival by Zip Code

Discussion will follow • snacks provided!
invite friends • all are welcome

“In the summer of 1995, Chicago experienced an unthinkable disaster, when extremely high humidity and a layer of heat-retaining pollution drove the heat index up to more than 126 degrees. Cooked: Survival by Zip Code tells the story of this tragic heatwave, the most traumatic in U.S. history, in which 739 citizens died over the course of just a single week, most of them poor, elderly, and African American.

“When peeled away from the shocking headlines, the story reveals the less newsworthy but long-term crisis of pernicious poverty, economic, and social isolation and racism. Cooked is a story about life, death, and the politics of crisis in an American city that asks the question: Was this a one-time tragedy, or an appalling trend?”

MAMA MIA PASTA!

Last month, the Fishline Food Bank served 1,000 families! The need continues to grow.

During the month of July, we will collect the ingredients needed to make a spaghetti dinner and assemble them in individual bags for our Service Sunday project on July 28th. These ready-to-prepare bags with easy instructions are very popular and healthy offerings.

Here are the Items we need: spaghetti pasta • two 14.5 ounce cans of diced tomatoes (not the large size) • one medium yellow onion. We will have spice packets available to include.

Please place items in the baskets in the Narthex. Thank you!

Photographs by Kate Kinney

In black and white photography, Grace’s own Kate Kinney sees things in a new way. “Searching for light and dark is a spiritual act. And grey tones help create the photograph. My philosophy is that living in the grey is just right. What a great way to see the world: a camera, a train, and amazing people in Bhutan and India.”

Join Kate and learn about her travels and photographs at a reception during coffee hour on July 21.

Youth Sailing Trip Aboard the Adventuress

Youth Sailing Trip Aboard the Adventuress

August 28 – 31

All high school youth — rising freshman through recently graduated seniors — are invited on a trip of a lifetime aboard the historic schooner, Adventuress. We will spend 4 days/3 nights onboard this 113-foot ship, sailing through the waters of the Salish Sea. Along the way, we will learn about navigation and marine biology (Adventuress is a floating lab!); we'll search for whales and other wildlife; we'll engage in community building activities; cook meals together; create music and prayer; and even take turns sailing the ship!

We will board the Adventuress at the Port of Everett Marina on Wednesday, August 28 at 10:00 a.m. and return to the Shilshole Bay Marina in Seattle on Saturday, August 31 at 2:00 p.m.

$200/person. Scholarships readily available – contact Kim at kim@gracehere.org.
