Grace Church Annual Parish Meeting

Beginning February 8, after church, I will once again be offering the Foundations Class. It is designed for those who want a deeper understanding of the Episcopal Church and my particular take on Christianity. If you are new to Grace and curious about the Episcopal tradition, are a teenager or adult who wants to be confirmed, or if you’ve been around Grace a while and want a refresher, this is for you. It’s a new member's class, a confirmation class, and a spiritual repast combined.

We will meet in the Living Room after worship on Sundays, 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m., from February 8 – April 19 (except Feb. 15 and 22, when we will start at 1 p.m.).

For those who wish, we will travel together to St. Mark’s Cathedral on Saturday, April 25, to be confirmed by the Bishop.

In light of the affordable housing shortage on Bainbridge Island, members of Grace have begun to ask: what, then, can we do? Following the 9:30 a.m. service, let’s gather in the sanctuary to hear from: Housing Resources Bainbridge about local solutions; from the Rev. Canon Carla Robinson about how other Episcopal congregations are responding; and from our BI siblings at Bethany Lutheran, who will be breaking ground on their affordable housing project in 2027. As we prepare for Lent, Holy Week, and the joy of Easter, join your Grace family for our annual Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper.

The Men of Grace will be serving a feast of buttermilk pancakes, gluten-free pancakes, sausage, vegetarian sausage, and applesauce. Suggested donation is $5 per person or $15 per family. You are invited to dress festively and bring a friend, think Mardi Gras.

To keep Grace safe and secure, we have a Night Owl team. Each team member volunteers for a week at a time. We walk the exterior of the building, verify all the doors, windows, and the gate are closed and latched. This takes about 15-20 minutes. The team members arrive after 9:00 p.m. or a bit later, after all the folks involved in a rental or other Grace activities have left. After a short orientation, you'll be ready to go. If you want to jump right in, you can read about the duties of the Night Owls and sign up online.

This month’s outreach project will again focus on loving our unhoused neighbors. You may do this by donating the following items: tarps, desperately needed; hygiene wipes; and canned soups with pull-tab tops. Please place donated items near the baskets or on the floor by the name tag kiosk in the narthex.

Celebrating the New Sound System

All are invited to attend a mini-concert featuring Grace’s own talented musicians in celebration of the installation of our new sound system. The concert will take place on Sunday, February 22, at 11:30 a.m. Contact Kim Thompson with questions.

The Gift of Imagination
A Garth Edwards Retrospective,
1950 – 2021

For fifty years, Garth Edwards crafted whimsical, large-scale installations. This retrospective features his more personal artwork: his magical, vibrant, colored pencil drawings and garden sculptures, on loan from several Gracies (Thank You!).

Underlying all of Garth's work is the sense that life is to be celebrated in all its irony, puzzlements, and humor. A long-time member of Grace, Garth’s memory lives on in his art, which includes the mural in the Grace nursery and the playground gate. This show, which will run through March 1, was lovingly curated by his partner, Pegge Ashcroft.

The Gallery at Grace is an ongoing (quiet!) fundraiser for Grace. A portion of the proceeds from your art purchase comes back to the church. Thank you for your support!

If you attended the Interfaith (IFC) Council Thanksgiving Service in November, you'll remember what a lovely and meaningful night that was. The IFC organizes several events every year (a spring music festival and the BHS Baccalaureate service, to name two), and meets monthly to learn more about BI and No. Kitsap's faith and spiritual communities, beyond our own — Baha'i, LDS, Judaism, Dances of Universal Peace, etc. If this is of interest to you and you would like to represent Grace Church in this organization, please contact Anne Kundtz. Anne and Carol Corbus are seeking a partner for this spring who is willing to represent Grace next fall and beyond. Thank you!

Honoring Air, Protecting the Breath of Life

The Fr. Charles Brandt Annual Memorial Lecture

Father Charles Brandt was a Hermit-Priest who lived for many years on the Oyster River in British Columbia. The Hermitage Society is dedicated to preserving his legacy and promoting his vision of a more contemplative ecology. This year’s Memorial Lecture is a speaker series on the topic of “Hermitage as Spiritual Practice. The talks will be recorded and uploaded to YouTube shortly after the series concludes.

Schola Nova will chant vespers on Sunday, February 15, at 6 PM. Please join us for this short, contemplative service at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church to commemorate the Transfiguration.
